ABOUT
US:
We are second generation outfitters with two camps in
operation in central and southeastern Montana to ensure our hunters the
finest hunting that Montana has to offer. We lease the exclusive
hunting rights on several private ranches as well as being the only
permitted outfitter on about 60,000 acres of National Forest. Over the
last few years we are very proud that our hunters have received several
Montana Outfitters and Guides Association/SCI awards. We also have the
distinction of being the only outfitter in the state to have received
awards in each of the four major categories, Mule deer, Whitetail,
Antelope and Archery Elk as well as having received more youth awards than
any other outfitter in the state. Our rifle hunters have had
a 98% success rate on Antelope and 95% success rate on deer.
We are a small, family owned operation having taken over
the business from Jamie’s parents in 1978. Our own hunting experiences
have taken us to Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, Montana, Wyoming,
South Dakota, New Mexico and Mexico. Jamie was awarded the PSE Bowhunter
of the Year Award in 1990. He has also served several years on the board
of directors for the Montana Outfitters & Guides Association.
We cannot guarantee you will harvest an animal, but our
Christian values will ensure you receive the most honest, enjoyable,
successful hunt possible.
HUNTING WITH
US:
We are able to provide personal service for quality animals
by limiting the number of hunters to 4 or 6 per hunt at each camp. All
hunts are fully guided and outfitted with 4 wheel drive being the method
of transportation to and from the hunting area. Excellent
accommodations are provided at each camp including hot showers and home
cooked meals. We have guided hunters ranging in age from 12 to
81 with excellent results, although the better your physical condition the
more you will enjoy the hunt and increase your odds for success. You are
only required to bring your personal gear, license, and shooting
equipment. J&J Guide Service provides all necessary services and
equipment to ensure your success, including guide service, meals, lodging,
and trophy care of animals. We follow a strict code of ethics and
expect our hunters to do the same as all hunts are conducted by the rules
of fair chase.
RIFLE HUNTS:
Deer
Montana’s deer license is good for one deer and may be used on
either a whitetail or a mule deer. It is a five week season that always
closes the Sunday after Thanksgiving so it usually opens about the fourth
Sunday in Oct. With a wide variety of habitat at each camp we will usually
employ several different hunting methods each week. The hunting
method for each day will vary depending on the time of year (pre-rut, rut,
post rut), weather conditions, physical condition of the hunter as well as
species being hunted. A typical day of hunting would be spent
glassing agricultural areas from elevated points hoping to catch animals
moving to and from feeding and bedding areas in the morning and evening.
The remainder of the day is spent still hunting, spot and stalking, making
organized drives, and rattling and calling. The length of the average shot
will be from 150 to 250 yards with every attempt to find a solid rest. You
should practice shooting prone, sitting, and kneeling while bracing your
rifle on a solid object such as a rock, fence post, or tree.
Recommended rifle size is .25 caliber up to whatever you feel comfortable
shooting and should be sighted in 2” high at 100 yards.
Antelope
Montana has a four week antelope season that opens two weeks prior to deer
season and closes two weeks after deer season opens. Hunting for antelope
is almost purely spot and stalk with an excellent chance of taking one of
the most beautiful and exotic animals in North America. This hunt is
perfect for a man/wife, father/son or daughter as it is not unusual to see
over 100 antelope per day insuring nonstop action and hunting excitement.
The size animal you can expect to take would be:
Mule Deer: 22 to 27 inch spread, 4 or 5 points per side
scoring 145 to 165 Boone & Crockett points
Whitetail: 17 to 20 inch spread, 4 or 5 points per
side scoring 125 to 150 Boone & Crockett points
Antelope: horns 13 1/2 to 15 inches long scoring 72 to 78
points
Although our hunters see and take animals each year larger than
the sizes listed above, these are what we feel confident you will have the
opportunity to take.
2008 Rates (per hunter)
5 day deer (whitetail or mule deer) 1 hunter with 1 guide
= $4200
5 day deer (whitetail or mule deer) 2 hunters with 1
guide = $3200
during first two weeks of deer season you may add antelope at no
additional charge if license is drawn
3 day Antelope 1 hunter with 1 guide = $1800
3 day Antelope 2 hunters with 1 guide = $1250
(non hunting guests welcome at $100 per day)
License Information:
Deer licenses price has not been set for 2008 but are guaranteed
through an outfitter sponsored category. Application deadline for deer
licenses is March 15th.
Antelope licenses cost $203 and are on a limited draw basis with an
application deadline of June 1st.
Booking and General Information
- We require a 1/3 deposit when reservations are made. Deposits are
nonrefundable. Balance of the price of hunt is to be paid 30 days
prior to arrival.
- The price of the hunt includes everything except license,
transportation to and from camp, any gratuities you feel appropriate,
and approximately a $60 cost to process your animal if you do not take
it with you so the meat may be distributed to needy families.
- Hunters should arrive the afternoon prior to the day their hunt
begins and depart the morning after the last day.
- J&J Guide Service provides all necessary services and equipment
to insure your success including guide service, meals, lodging and
trophy care of animals.
- The only thing you are required to bring is your personal gear,
shooting equipment, license and clothing.
- Clothing will vary depending on the time of year and species hunted.
For rifle hunts Montana law requires all hunters wear 400 square
inches of blaze orange to be worn above the waist and visible from all
angles. A soft mesh or orange camo vest is sufficient. All
outer clothing needs to be of a soft quiet material
ARCHERY HUNTS: Elk,
Deer and or Antelope combo
Montana has a six week archery season that opens the first or
second Saturday in Sept. and closes in mid Oct. Eastern Mt. has long been
known for the trophy quality of its whitetail and mule deer. The last few
years it has also become known as home to some of the world's largest elk.
All hunts will be at the Mill Iron camp with a maximum of two
hunters in camp per week.
Hunts are conducted from tree stands or groundblinds over waterholes or
trails between morning and evening feeding and bedding areas. Hunting
techniques also include spotting and stalking along with occasionally
bugling or cow calling bull elk. This hunt should be considered primarily
for deer (whitetail or mule deer) with an excellent opportunity to take an
elk
Antelope
We will use various hunting techniques such as spot and stalk, or sitting
over water holes but by far the most enjoyable, exciting and productive
method is the use of a small buck decoy. We do not offer archery only
Antelope hunts but during the first two archery hunts you may include
antelope with an elk and deer combo.
2007 - 2008 Rates (per hunter)
2 hunter with 1 guide - $2950
1 hunter with 1 guide - $3750
"add $500 for each additional animal taken elk, deer,
or antelope.

License Information
A deer and elk combo license (includes one deer "either whitetail or
mule deer", one elk, birds and fish) has not been set for
2008 but is guaranteed through an outfitter sponsored category.
Application deadline is March 15th. Archery antelope licenses cost $203
and are also guaranteed with the application deadline being June 1st. All
bowhunters must purchase an archery stamp ($8) by providing a copy of an
NBEF Bowhunter Education Certificate or any prior year's bowhunting
license from another state.
