  HUNTING     FISHING     WATERFOWL     LODGING     RATES

ABOUT US:   Polecat Creek Outfitters, Inc. was established in the Piedmont Triad area of North Carolina in 1999.  The President of the Company, Capt. Gary Knight, grew up in the Piedmont Triad area and has hunted and fished this area for 30 years.

Gary’s passion for the outdoors began like most youngsters while fishing for bluegills, crappie and largemouth bass and hunting small game animals such as squirrels, rabbits, dove and quail. As his passion grew, he began hunting large game such as Deer and Turkey.  He also began focusing on Striper and Crappie fishing. It wasn’t long before he became interested in bow hunting which is now one of his greatest passions.

Gary has another passion.  He has the passion to teach and to carry on the tradition of hunting and fishing the great outdoors.  He loves to teach youngsters and adults alike the positive role hunters play in conservation.  Therefore, he teaches the Hunters Safety Course and the IBEP Bow hunting course sponsored by the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission.

If you are interested in a fishing or hunting trip, you have come to the right spot. We work very hard to ensure you have a successful outing. We have a very high success rate on our fishing and hunting trips, but, of course, it is not 100% guaranteed. We hunt free roaming game.  The game can move when ever they want or choose to feed whenever they want.

DUCK HUNTS: Waterfowl hunting in the Piedmont Triad area has been good the past couple of years.  . We use all available resources to make your hunt one to remember.  Our geese hunts are held on private land mostly on fresh cut fields or on fields with crops that have not been plowed but they have been harvested. Let us take you on an early season hunt in September where we will hunt the whole month for our resident geese. Ryan Bristol and Rick Blake handles most of our geese hunts they have extensive knowledge and have great calling skills along with all the equipment you will need. If September is to early try our later months starting in November when migrating geese will be stopping to feed in corn fields after corn crops are harvested.

Duck hunts have been good over the past couple of years. Gary will handle most of our Duck Hunts We will use our War Eagle to put you in the right place for the best chance to get your limit. Gary has all the equipment you will need to make your trip successful. We hunt private impoundments and swamp land with beaver dams as well as few private areas for a chance at a variety of ducks. As with anywhere you hunt the weather plays a critical role in waterfowl hunting. If we get colder weather the birds will be on the move.

Our waterfowl hunts are priced right as well. We charge $150.00 per hunter we do require at least 2 hunters per outing with a maximum of 3 hunters. All you have to bring is your clothing, shotgun, shells and something to snack on. If you are coming from out of town check our lodging link to find a hotel in our area. You do have to have a current North Carolina hunting license and Federal Duck Stamp.

FISHING: We offer striper (Rockfish) and crappie fishing trips because they are two of Gary’s favorite species. Striper and crappie have a lot of similarities and differences. We take our clients to some of the most beautiful lakes and rivers in North Carolina and southern Virginia. We fish from a 2003 twenty foot War Eagle boat powered by a Mercury jet drive outboard. We want our clients to enjoy their entire fishing experience.

We offer striper fishing at Smith Mountain, Buggs Island (Kerr Lake) and the two rivers that feed the lake (Staunton and the Dan Rivers) and Jordan Lake. Most of the year we will take our clients to lake but during the spawn, we will take our clients to the Staunton and Dan River. The spring spawn usually takes place in April and early May. We fish for stripers with fresh caught gizzard, threadfin shad and alewives. Occasionally we will cast buck tails and top water lures.

We also offer striper fishing on the Roanoke River. We fish the Weldon section of the River. We offer these trips during the open and closed season. The majority of the time, we catch bigger fish during the closed season when you are not allowed to keep them. All Roanoke River trips are exciting because we troll with live shad caught from the river and we will also fish with buck tails. Combine that with the fact there are lots of fish in the river spawning at this time. This is a great opportunity for the fly fisherman to test their skills as well. The weather or changing river conditions can have large impact on our success but we normally do catch fish on these trips. If you have never fished the Roanoke River we would encourage you to book a trip this spring.

The best time to book a crappie fishing trip is when most people like to stay at home. We offer crappie fishing trips at Buggs Island and Jordan Lake during the months of January, February and early March. Clients will have the opportunity to catch the biggest crappie during these times, as opposed to to the trips during the remainder of the year. We will continue to fish for crappie throughout the year but we see our best results during the colder months. We fish with live shad 2-3 inches in length taken from the lake or small minnows. We have also seen success with small crappie jigs. During the summer months we move to night fishing. The size of the fish during night fishing trips are generally not as big, however there is usually many fish caught. If you have never fished for crappie in January or February or at night during the summer call us to learn some new tricks for these tasty fish.

We provide all the gear that the client will need as well as bait. The client will need to bring a lunch, snacks, drinks, and a cooler to take your fish home. The client will also need to provide your North Carolina fishing license, proper clothing including rain gear and sun screen. We strongly recommend a good pair of sun glasses.

HUNTING: We take great pride in providing you with a very exciting hunt.  All of our hunts take place on private land in which we lease from land owners or own. No matter what you are looking for whether it be a Whitetail Deer, Spring Gobbler, Wild Hog, Bob White Quail, or a Duck or Goose hunt we will take you there. For Waterfowl hunts please check out that links for specific details.

We offer Deer hunts in Person and Caswell County. We provide you with great opportunities and we have a good success rate. We do not over hunt the stand locations and they are set up for your best chance. We work very hard during the off season scouting crucial hunting areas, preparing new food plots and maintaining the food plots already established.  We do not sell so called “trophy hunts” although we have great opportunities for a trophy class deer. We normally use custom built tower and ladder stands. We sometimes use box type stands which are comfortable to sit in and can accommodate 2 people.

Spring Gobbler hunts are very exciting. We can’t think of many things that will stir you up more than a big ‘ol boss gobbler closing in with loud gobbles, strutting and drumming. Gary has been chasing turkeys for a long time and he has hunted for them in several different states. In his opinion there is no such thing as a professional “know it all” turkey hunter. Spring Gobblers continue to amaze him at how unpredictable they can be. Our Spring Gobbler hunts take place in Caswell, Person and Rockingham Counties. We offer fully guided Turkey hunts only.  If you are a skilled Turkey hunter and you do not have a great place to hunt, we have what you are looking for. We will go along with you to assist you with land lay out and property lines. If you are a beginner and are looking to learn we will take care of all the calling and set up of the hunt. Turkey hunting in our opinion is 70% knowing where to go and woodsman ship. Calling is about 30% of the challenge. We understand that turkey calling is very important, but without the right setup and knowledge of the land, turkey calling alone will not win you a prize winning turkey.

We will never guarantee that our clients will get a deer or turkey but we will promise our clients that we will work as hard as we can to make sure you have the best opportunity.
